Kids (5+)
Kids, just like adults, come up against roadblocks sometimes. They may be making a significant transition, struggling with peer issues, going through a family separation or experiencing anxiety for the first time.
Kids often communicate distress through their behaviour, making it difficult to identify the underlying cause. In addition to our counselling strategies, we use a range of play-based interventions to help kids understand their feelings and build the skills they need to navigate life’s unexpected challenges.

What can my child expect from a counselling session?Prior to taking on a referral for your child, we will always speak with their carer/s first. We want to understand why they believe a child might benefit from counselling and a bit about the family dynamic. We involve families as much as we can in our work. We also engage with schools and other services where appropriate and helpful, and always with consent from you and the child in your care. During our sessions kids can expect to draw, talk about their concerns, play therapeutic games and learn new skills.
-
How long are the sessions? Our kids session times can vary depending on age, level of concentration and whether family, health services or school consultation is involved in the support we are providing. We can discuss this further with you at your free initial consultation or first session.
-
Do you offer assessment and diagnosis support? While we certainly offer support to parents and children who might have received a diagnosis, we do not provide any assessment services at Amaya. We encourage you to work with your GP to identify the best service and referral pathways to assist you with this kind of support.

Adolescents
Adolescence is a time of immense change and growth. The transition to high school, shifts in peer and family relationships, and a growing sense of independence can feel exciting—and overwhelming. The adolescent brain is wired to seek novelty and form deeper connections with peers, yet it’s still very much under construction. Despite this, teens are often expected to manage their emotions and behaviour like adults with fully developed brains—a big ask for anyone. I offer a supportive space where adolescents (and their parents) can make sense of this stage, build insight, and strengthen the relationships that matter most.
