If You Know a Relationship Isn't Right for You, Why is it Still So Hard to Leave?

Many people come to counselling already knowing something doesn't feel right in their relationship.

They've noticed the uncertainty.

The disappointment.

The hope that things will eventually change.

What they can't always understand is why knowing isn't enough.

"If I knew it wasn't right, why was it still so hard to leave?"

Understanding the pattern is different from changing it.

"I knew it wasn't right."

"I saw the red flags from the beginning."

"So why did I keep hoping?"

You can recognise that a relationship isn't meeting your needs while another part of you still hopes things will be different.

You can know a relationship isn't giving you what you're looking for and still feel deeply disappointed when it ends.

You can genuinely want something different while feeling pulled towards what's familiar.

At first glance, that can seem confusing.

But when we begin to understand where those patterns come from, things often start to make more sense.

Most of us began learning about relationships long before we ever started dating.

Without realising it, we were learning what to expect from other people.

Whether it felt safe to need someone.

Whether our feelings mattered.

Whether love felt steady or uncertain.

Whether relationships felt secure or something that had to be worked for.

Those early experiences don't determine who we'll choose or how our relationships will unfold. But they do influence what feels familiar.

Sometimes that's why a relationship can feel incredibly compelling even when, deep down, you know it isn't giving you what you need.

Getting curious about the experiences that shaped you and the patterns that followed can be incredibly helpful.

Because when we understand where a pattern came from, we often have more freedom to choose something different.

Lasting change rarely begins with more dating advice.

It begins with understanding why a relationship that wasn't meeting your needs could still feel so hard to let go of.

Because when your patterns begin to make sense, you have more freedom to choose something different.
